Drakes Cream Filled Cups...darker chocolate cake, more cream filling...basically a Hostess cupcake turned upside down with chocolate frosting covering the whole inverted cake... Tasted just like the original ring ding...and yes, the ring dings were a single to a pack and one was enough... Just a hair thinner than the now Ring Ding jrs but about 3x as big around... Those and cream filled cups were always my favorite...also loved the pink or white snoballs... Suzy Qs were about 35% larger too... And yes, Yankee doodles were 3 packs and Yodels had 3 packs too... Back then it was safer for kids to go outside, climb trees and play in the woods and ride bikes and walk/run everywhere so these all were just sugar fuel for fun outside times... Made with Sugar too, no High Fructose Corn Syrup!! ...Those were the days... Deliver Newspapers, shovel driveways, mow lawns, wash cars etc., and make .50cents to a $1.50 per job completed and at the end of the school week and working odd jobs you'd have $10.00, $15.00 or $20.00 - would give your Mom $5.00, saved $4.00 -$9.00 and blew $3.00 - $6.00 on Haircuts, Comic books and Cream filled cups/Orange Crush...
Drakes Cakes also use to bake and sell Cream Cups Chocolate covered chocolate cup cakes..that were filled with white cream..but no squiggles on top)...sadly..those Cream Cups Cakes no longer exsist.
Oh yea. The Ring Ding was bigger than a Scooter Pie, It was at least 3.5" and about 3/4' thick! I lived on these when I was a kid. That with regular Coca Cola. Nope, I never got fat. All that sugar wired me enough to burn it all off playing OUTSIDE!
Yep, Ring Dings were the best, Hostess had to come up with a ripoff called ding dongs. The original Ring Ding was much bigger too. Yankee Doodles cupcakes used to come three to a package too.
I just loved Yodels. It seemed to me that Drake's was Hostess' biggest competitor, and in the NYC area where I grew up, it probably was. But I now see that, for a while at least, Drake's was owned by Hostess.
