S&H is still around, but it's now called S&H Greenpoints. You amass points from the stores you shopped at, and redeem them on their website for their premiums.
Our phone number was but one digit off from the Top-Valu stamps redemption store and even though we answered with "hello" people started rattling off questions and checking stock ... I agreed to hold an item for a woman once, imagine her annoyance when she showed up at the store to claim it and they knew nothing ... bwahahahah
Mom put us to work getting the "tons" of plaid stamp into the booklets. We used a wet sponge......too many stamps to lick. We cashed those puppies in for the lamp in my bedroom and some other items. I think we actually went to a store called "Plaidland". I think Dad got most of them from filling-up at the Mobile Gas Station. (Or did Mom get them from food shopping ??) ....... I can't remember !
Haha! I remember these.....my mother bought a really nice "oil painting", matted and framed of a snowbound cabin....2 ft x 2ft... I must say, is very nice! Can't recall what else she purchased, but yes, good old Greenstamps lol
We shopped at A&P, they gave out plaid stamps and those stamps got me so many things such as my movie projector (super 8 MM), the screen to view the movies on, a great rainbird sprinkler with brass head and loads of other things for our new home. There were also Blue Stamps but can't recall what stores gave those out.
There was a Green Stamp store in the town where I live now when I moved here 24 years ago. My mom gave me her old S&H stamps and I got a bassinet for my baby who is now 23. I also got a set of bowls which I still have two of the three....

Of course in those innocent days nobody realized that the manufacturer was using the cheap towel to add weight to the box in place of soap!
