My dad was the type to use a belt for punishment. When in school, they used a paddle with holes drilled into it. That got my attention very fast, from then on, I was mommy's little angel.
I can remember being spanked only once and as far as I can recollect, was the only child in my family to receive one! And it was not by hand, either, but with a printer's line guage, which was flexible with inches and printer's measurements on it...and maybe just once was enough because wood breaks, steel does not!
Spanking was jsut part of grwoing up as I and my siblings were disciplined that way. Yes at that time mu cousins and friends also we were spanked . It was a quick way to learn with that lasting impression to sit on reminding you of behaving! We all turned out ok as we learned by being held accountable for breaking rules !

Just had to add...When my youngest son was in kindergarden (1993-1994) the school was actively teaching the kids that they could have their parents jailed. One day when I told him to pick up and get ready for bed, he totally ignored me, so I gave him a little "putch" on his backside (more so to get his attention) and he told me that he'll have me put in jail. I got down on my knee, looked him straight in the eyes and very calmly said, "If I'm going to jail I'm going to make it worth my while." He never used that threat again. He's 27 now and we still share a laugh about it. He says it was the ONLY time he was ever really afraid of me. Needless to say - spankings continued as needed and I am very proud of the young man he turned out to be.
Yep. I recall as I am reading these wonderful anecdotes attempting to run from my mom when she called me, and my tiny feet would automatically turn to face her. Then approaching my pre-teen years I remember mom busting the handle of a hairbrush over my head. We managed to survive, live to tell the tale, and I think I am a better adult for it. Thanks Mom & Dad!
If you messed up at friend's house you got spanked from his parent. Dreaded the walk home because I knew a phone call was being made and I had another spanking coming when I got home. Didn't happen too often, because we learned real fast what was acceptable behavior. Todays kids have no respect for anybody because they know there are no consequences to their actions.
My wife once taught at a public high school that was so dangerous, it had its own squad of NYC police assigned to it. And that was before the metal detectors came in.
What's sad is the police have come to some schools to take kids into custody. The kids get charged with a crime and lawyers and judges and newspaper reporters get involved in some infraction that might have earned a kid a few sharp smacks on the seat of the pants a generation ago.
I thought it still was okay........ no, we have to reason with them and then they can do whatever they want since we can't touch them or they will call the police......
