I lived in Vietnam 2006-08 where I worked as a university professor. I often get corrected by perfectionists when I said I lived in Saigon, but most of the non-communist locals (many of whom were born after the war) call it Saigon, warning me not to use that name for a postal address (the abbreviation HCMC, or TPHCM in Vietnamese) is fine. From there I moved directly to the Philippines. I was surprised that many people I met in the Philippines, upon realizing I lived in Vietnam for two previous years, always questioned me about the war and wondered how I survived all the bombing. No one told them the war had been over for three decades!
