The main reason for the Dodgers and Giants moving to the West Coast had to do with the Pacific Coast League minor league teams talking about forming a third major league. This freaked out the two owners(Walter O'Malley and Horace Stoneman) and led to their respective teams going West.

1957 was the Dodgers' last year in Brooklyn. Despite winning the World Series in 1955 and the NL pennant in 1956, New York City could not come to terms with the Dodgers for a new stadium and so they went to California, with the Giants in tow. Both Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax would have their best years in Los Angeles.
