(all founded in 1962)

Back then..."Shopping" meant a special family all day outing. Groceries at the grocery store, nails & tools at a hardware store, clothes at a clothing store, oil & brake fluid at a gas station....and a special stop at A & W for a frosty mug of Root Beer.
When I was a kid (Fort Lee, NJ, 1949 - 1961/Wayne, NJ 1961 - 1979) we had the "Five & Ten" ( abbreviation for 5 cent & 10 cent stores)...no items were styill a nickle or a dime at that time, but the prices were nnowhere near what you pay in the current fdrop of "Dollar Stores"...the 21st Century iteration of the old 5&10...they were REAL Mom & Pop stores...the Atlas 5&10 in Fort Lee was owned by a Holocaust Survivor and his wife,,,I'd go nuts in the toy' section' - a short space of about 12 feet or so - dedicated to cheap plastic merchandise that I thought was the greatest stuff in the world at the age of between 3 and prolly 11 years old...
K Mart also had a discount store called Jupiter's. We had a branch in Owosso Michigan until the late 70's. Before Zayre's bought them out, we had Yankee's.
When I was growing up in W. PA, we had Hills, which was bought out by Treasure Island. I do remember Zayre and Mason's as well. There was also Fisher's Big Wheel in New Castle.
My mother and I made an almost weekly stop into Hills when I was a very little girl. I was sad when the store closed (and never thought Treasure Island was one ounce as fun!).

I remember Zayre in St. Louis from the late '60's to the late '70's.
