I just heard a story about the flash cubes used with Instamatix cameras. They were sold at the PX of an Air Force radar site, but when people bought them, they were all "used" - the flash had already gone off.
Turns out, the RF from the radar ignited the flash cubes when the truck that delivered them drove close to the radar antenna.
I thought that Magicubes differed from flash cubes by having a built-in battery, but apparently I was wrong. According to Wikipedia, anyhow, they used some kind of chemical reaction.
We used a paperclip to poke in the little slot on the bottom of the cube, press the little wire and make it flash on its own. For some reason, our parents frowned on that activity.
