Your memory is GOOD ! I have to throw in the towel on this ! I was born in '57 so I was perhaps 10 to 13 years old. Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles,Steve McQueen, Jim Brown, Telly Savalas came easy to me but the others are a struggle to recall. I knew Robert Shaw was in a "good war movie" in those days....but couldn't accurately picture which one. BTW....at the end of the original "Planet of the Apes" (1968 ?) with the camera peering behind the Statue of Liberty's crown....I had to ask my Dad why Charlton Heston was so upset ?? He responded , "They are still on the planet Earth"....Wow ! Then it hit me ! The original "Plantet of the Apes" was a great movie too ! --- And one weekend my brother and I saw "Night of the Living Dead"....was that 1968 as well ?? Scared the crap out of me ! My clearest memories of Charles Bronson: "The Mechanic" and "Death Wish".
Let's see, not all the Dozen were well-known actors, so I can never remember them. Numbered by height: #1 - Samson Posey (Clint Walker); #2 - Pinkley (Donald Sutherland); I think #3 might have been Jefferson (Jim Brown); skip to #8 Archer J. Maggot (Telly Savalas); #9 Watislaw (sp?)(Charles Bronson); #10 Jimenez (Trini Lopez); #11 Victor Franco (John Cassavettes); and #12 Bravos. So, I blanked on the names and order of Gilpin, Vladik, Sawyer and...dang.
Then there were the non-Dozen: Lee Marvin, Richard Jaeckel, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Webber, Robert Ryan, Ralph Meeker, George Kennedy and I hope I didn't leave anyone out.
Although Robert Shaw from "Jaws" wasn't in "The Great Escape," "Kelly's Heroes" or "The Dirty Dozen," he was in a couple other great war movies from that timeframe: "The Battle of the Bulge" (German Colonel Martin Hessler commanding a brigade of tanks) and as an RAF pilot in "The Battle of Britain." Now, to compound the earlier trivia question I asked, this actor was in "The Great Escape," 1963, "The Battle of the Bulge," 1965, "The Battle of Britain," 1969 and "Kelly's Heroes," 1970.
OK....I didn't cheat.....my memory of the actors isn't strong. In "Dirty Dozen" we had Jim Brown, Lee Marvin, Telly Savalas, ---- Shaw (from "Jaws") and others I can picture in my head but cannot name now (bad memory). In "Great Escape" my memory is worse....Steve McQueen and some Britist actors. My final answer: ---- Shaw (The shark hunter from "Jaws" - forgot his first name)..........I'm weak ! LOL !
