I remember perfectly the transition from stocking to pantyhose. It was a mixed blessing for men. The skirts immediately got hiked up (mini skirts) but then in the end game, it was more of a challenge.
I like the look of "nylons" rather than pantyhose. I have garter belts and nylon stockings. I wear them with formal wear, otherwise I never wear pantyhose. They are uncomfortable and expensive when you consider their "shelf life". I hate the "catches" that show, and the fact that one "run" and it's over.
Hated garters and remember the stockings that had a back seam that had to be kept straight. As a small girl we had brown thick stockings for weekdays and white on Sunday held up by garters on a waist.( a little cotton sleeveless shirt tat came to the waist). Loved tights or leotards as we called them. Goodbye garters till nylons became necessary to look lady like. Live in jeans now.
But don't you remember those awful garter belts, or girdles, and doing up the 4 garters on each leg! The nylons looked nicer than those "new pantyhose", I thought, but the garters I hated. And the runs. I haven't even worn pantyhose for years - hate those things!
Who was it sold the stockings that wouldn't get a run even with a bullet hole in them? They actually shot a stocking on television! Imagine some meticulous lady mortified to arrive at the emergency room with a gunshot wound and a run in her stocking!
