Stationed there 1979-82 as a musician with the 298th Army Band. We all had a hate-love relationship with the Wall. It was easy for most of us to visit East Berlin with our C.O.'s permission, with an endorsement by the Commanding General (much easier to get than it sounds). Being there I had so many wonderful things happen. We got to know the Soviets and they actually came to respect us. Had mixed feelings when the Wall came down. Always wanted to show it to my kids.
I had an opportunity to be in Berlin shortly after the wall came down and I was lucky enough to take a piece of this wall before it was gone. I was shocked to see the size and length of this wall. It took them awhile to remove it. I was also surprised how quickly Berlin was going to erase this complete history. From what I've heard, the area that was known as dead man zone was quickly replaced with high rise condo's.
