They corresponded to the number of cylinders the engine had. 4 each side = V8 3 each side = V6

I remember in the sixies teenage boys would count up to 100 of those portholes to determind if their girlfriend loved them

The Century wasn't big comparatively. The Century was the Special's body with a larger engine. The Century was so-called because, in the thirties when that line was introduced, it could achieve a then unheard of 100 miles an hour!
