Ghia was the designer. The VW Karmann-Ghia was so named because it had a body built by Karmann and designed by Ghia. Under the skin it was just a regular VW Beetle, but a very sexy looking one!
It was a VW model, sometime after the original VW bug, I think, trying to sell to us over in the USA...ought to see how many Ghias sold in Germany as opposed to here...not sure of the spelling, Karmann Ghia...or Kharmman...my dad had one in late'50's, it had a back seat and back window I could get on and watch the sky on a trip to the Rockies...he drove it so hard on mountain roads in the Rockies my mother shrieked in fright, oh duh...later my late husband had one when I got with him mid-70's...piece of crap, because I'd had the best..so Porsche either bought, was a branch, whatever...first car I really had was Porsche Super Coupe, Like Janis Joplin's, only mine was hotter, same body, hers the coupe...the SC had more power...this was late 60's...the German mechanics loved me, I soaked up everything they had to teach, and still I drive like they taught me, never had to have a brake job, or clutch adjustment...don't need a tach, just listen...then the silly Porsche with the roll bar and the plastic body came out...I raced that guy four times, gave him a guess who won...the two lamborghinis were so hot I can still feel them, but that SC ddid everything I asked. I've driven lots of sports and race cars...I could doo all the work, drive with my eyes shut...now I'm going to go get a cool cloth for my forehead, I'm getting all flustered!
Only it was "Karmann" if I remember. Ghia, again if I recall, was the Italian studio that designed the cars, so there may be a relationship. I'm too lazy to look it up.
