Home Economics class in high school
Girls, mostly, took these classes while the boys had Shop.
The girls studied such topics as cooking, baking, and dressmaking.

Good "home economics" meant keeping a future husband happy.

In my school boys were not allowed to take Home Ec but were required to take shop! And if I knew then what I know now, I would have DEMANDED to take Home Ec as I am a lousy cook, but was even a more lousier shop student...even though I did manage to make a ping pong table, a basketball wooden back board and a Montana shaped Bread Board! We also had to take mechanical drawing (shudder) which I hated...I never was able to look at a drawing and decipher it correctly...

This reminds me of a comment my twin sister made while we were in high school - "You ever notice that almost all Home Ec teachers are un-married women?"

Even in this picture...no wedding ring! LOL

I have always been a good cook and I wanted to take a cooking class in high school but it required a signature from both of my parents because it was considered a girl's class. Mom said yes. Dad said no. So I couldn't take it.

I love the great B & W pics Mr. Duff offers and I really enjoyed the studious look of this young lady! Smile

My homeroom in high school was in the Home Economics cooking classroom. Every once in a while our homeroom teacher would surprise us with freshly baked muffins to eat during the morning announcements. The rest of the school was jealous!
