Traffic on New York City avenues was two-way
9th and 10th Aves. became one-way in 1948, and the others
followed, ending with Madison and 5th Aves. in 1966.

If you go even further back even the cross streets used to be 2 way. Don't recal the years but that must've been a real nightmare!
