My father, who alone amoung my friend's dads, loved pop music in the 60's and beyond, was a huge fan of his, as was I. His favorite was 'Sundown' while mine is 'If You Could Read My Mind'. But I have a great love for 'Canadian Railway Trilogy' as well.
So Duff, where in the Village were you living in 1974? I lived at 15 Jones Street, 29 West 12th Street, and 12 Fifth Avenue between 1959 and 1966, with a side residence in New Jersey in 1962-64. Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is one of the all-time greats.
Gordon had alot of memorible hits in the 70's. I still have a couple of his albums. Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald was one of my favorites along with Sundown and Carefree highway

Okay, so GL may not have hit the big time in the U.S. until the '70s, but I just had to include him here...
True story:
I was doing the dishes in my Greenwich Village apartment (sometime in 1974, I'd say), reflecting on the various radio stations I listened to and the types of music they played. When I got to WCBS-FM (which at the time had a format that I think they called "The Young Sound"), Gordon Lightfoot is the artist that first came to mind. I started singing "If You Could Read My Mind", and wandered over to the radio and turned on WCBS-FM. You guessed it; they were playing that song. I was about a verse ahead of it, in tune!
