The house we grew up in on Long Island was built in 1923 and IT had a fan in the kitchen that vented to the outside.

Unless the range hood is vented to the outside, I refuse to use it. I don't understand the ones that just vent into the room. Sure, there's a filter, but I have no confidence that it does anything except take the steam, smoke or whatever and blow it around the kitchen.
